Small group training in Amsterdam East: coaching in every class, in a small group

Small group training means you train in a small group with a coach who watches the whole class and adjusts every exercise to your level. At CrossFit Zeeburg in Amsterdam East, all our group classes work exactly like that: small groups and a coach in every class. You can start with zero experience. Want to try it first? Come and do two weeks of unlimited training.

Sound familiar? You've got a gym membership, you wander around with a programme on your phone, and after a few weeks the sofa wins. Personal training helps, but it gets expensive fast. Small group training sits right in between.

What is small group training?

Small group training is training in a small group, with a coach right there with you. You'll also see names like small groups training, semi personal training or small group personal training. The idea is always the same: you get proper guidance from a trainer, but you share that trainer with a few other people.

There's no fixed rule for how small "small" is. What matters is this: the coach has to be able to see everyone and correct everyone. If the trainer is just standing at the front counting out loud, it's simply a big group class.

So does training with a coach actually work? Yes. People who train with guidance stick with it better and get stronger than people who train alone from a plan on paper. That's been studied. It's not magic, but the difference is real.

What a small group class at CrossFit Zeeburg looks like

A class lasts an hour. You walk in, the workout is ready and a coach keeps an eye on you. You don't need to write your own programme or figure out which weight to pick. You just show up and we'll take care of the rest.

A CrossFit class usually goes like this: a warm-up, a part where you practise technique or strength, and a short, tough workout. That workout is called the WOD (workout of the day). So you'll roughly know what to expect the first time you walk in.

Everyone does the same workout, but not everyone does it the same way. The coach adjusts the weight, the exercise, the number of repetitions and the pace to suit you. Every workout is scaled. Not pointlessly easy, but right for you and safe.

Because the group is small, the coach gets to know you. They'll spot when your technique could be better. And if you're not there for a week, you'll be missed. Besides our regular classes we also run Weightlifting, Gymnastics, StrongLifts and Hybrid Endurance, all in the same small groups.

Small group vs personal training vs regular group classes

Each option has its place. Here's how they compare:

What you getPersonal trainingSmall group trainingRegular gym
CoachJust for youA coach in every class, for a small groupUsually only at the start or by appointment
TrainingBuilt entirely around youReady when you arrive, scaled to your level by the coachYou write or follow your own programme
Training togetherNoYes, with familiar facesMostly on your own
PriceThe most expensive: the coach is there just for youLower per class: you share the coachOften the cheapest

Personal training is a better fit if you've got a very specific goal or want to work one-to-one on your technique. We do that too: have a look at personal training. Curious what that roughly costs? Read what a personal trainer costs.

Who small group training works for

For anyone who wants to train with guidance but doesn't want to pay for a personal trainer. And for anyone who never manages to keep it up on their own. Starting is something pretty much everyone can do. Keeping it up, that's where it goes wrong. A fixed class, a coach who counts on you and people you know make that a whole lot easier.

Never trained with a barbell? That's fine. You start at your level. You don't need to be fit to start. You do need to be willing to train.

Are you 60 or older? We also have CrossFit 60+, with its own classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.

Got a health issue or an injury, are you pregnant or on medication? If in doubt, check with your doctor or physio first. Your coach will adapt the exercises to match. We don't take over the role of whoever's treating you.

Schedule, group size and price

We train seven days a week, with 48 classes in a regular week. On weekdays you can start as early as 07:00. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday the last class starts at 20:00. At the weekend you train in the morning, until 13:00. All times are on the schedule. Changes and open spots show up in the Sportbit app.

We keep the groups small so the coach can see everyone. For your membership you pay per 4 weeks:

MembershipHow oftenPer 4 weeks
Strong foundation2× per week (8 credits)€96 to €106
Full freedomUnlimited (28 credits)€111 to €127

The longer the term you pick (3, 6 or 12 months), the lower the price per 4 weeks. Prefer to stay flexible? A drop-in class is €21 and a 10-class card is €180, valid for three months. You'll find everything in one place on our pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

How many people are in a group?

We keep the groups small so the coach can see and correct everyone. You can check how many spots are still open in a class in the Sportbit app.

What is semi personal training?

Another name for the same idea: you train with a coach, but you share them with a few other people. So you get personal attention for a lower price than one-to-one.

Is small group training the same as CrossFit?

Not necessarily. Small group training says something about the format: a small group with a coach. With us, that means CrossFit classes plus classes like Weightlifting, Gymnastics and Hybrid Endurance.

Can I join if I have an injury?

Often yes, with adapted exercises. If in doubt, check with your doctor or physio first and tell your coach what's going on. They'll adjust the training to match.

How often should I come each week?

My advice: start with twice a week. That's doable next to work and family, and it gives you a solid base. Want more later? You can always step it up.

Does small group training help you lose weight?

I'm not going to promise you anything. Training makes you stronger and fitter, but losing weight depends on a lot more, like food, sleep and stress. What the group does do: it helps you keep going.
